In an interview with Al-Monitor, leader of Tunisia's Ennahda Party, Rachid Ghannouchi, claimed that Islam was a "flexible religion" open to "free interpretation and understanding".
"We are Tunisian Muslims who are determined to live in our age as believing Muslims. There is only one Islam, but we believe it is a flexible religion that interacts with each environment, with each age, provided that we understand Islam properly and exercise the laws of ijtihad in terms of free interpretation and free understanding." Ghannouchi claimed.
Although the application of Islam can change based on the environment, Ijtihad takes place within the framework of the Shari'ah and not within a non-Islamic democratic system. Furthermore Ijtihad is not for each individual to derive their own interpretation and understanding of Islam, but rather for a Mujtahid who strives to derive rules from the Islamic sources for new problems that have no clear or definitive rules.
The idea of 'pragmatism' has led Ennahda to compromise Islam and seek to mix it with false secular ideas such as democracy and liberalism. In 2016, Ghannouchi declared “there is no longer any justification for political Islam in Tunisia.” And that Ennahda was a party of “Muslim democrats". When will these "Islamists" realize that the birth of Islam cannot occur through a non-Islamic system?
