Final showdown, the Hama massacre, took place in February 1982 when the government crushed the uprising by the Islamic movement (Muslim Brotherhood of Syria) which commence in mid-70's.
The Islamic movement who are Sunni with the support of the oppressed masses kicked against Assad's new class -his family, Alawite and the Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party. Dominance and misuse of power and corruption was the order of the day. The security and intelligence sector was also monopoly of the Alawite.
In schools, children were taught songs praising Assad. Teachers began each lesson with the song "Our Eternal Leader, Hafez al-Assad", and he was sometimes portrayed with seemingly divine attributes. Sculptures and portraits depicted him with the Islamic prophet, Muhammad, and after his mother's death the government produced portraits of her with a halo. Syrian officials were compelled to call Assad "the sanctified one" ("al-Muqaddas"). This strategy is also pursued by his son, Bashar al-Assad all these were classified as kufr and unacceptable in Islam. Thus, a revolt was obligatory.
To quench the resistant Assad did not recount his steps for good rather employed helicopter gunships, bulldozers and artillery bombardment razing down cities, killing thousands of people. Hama ordeal was melted in February,
1982.
